"Gill in Gold: OCM Icon" is a mixed media relief
sculpture diptych presented to the Omaha Children's Museum upon the completion of my 6-month artist residency.
Museum visitors and staff contributed to this piece by sculpting the faces and adding their signatures to the background text
areas.
The following artwork was exhibited October 3-28,
2007 at the Artists' Cooperative Gallery, Omaha, Nebraska, along with the CULTIGEN series of cement sculpture.
The exhibit was titled "LOVE LOSS LIFE". The exhibition
statement follows:
Love Loss Life. That pretty much says it all, doesn't it? This
has been a year of extremes--much happiness and deep sadness. Experiences we all have in common. Life always filters
into my work, shapes and informs it. For several years, nests, eggs, and feathers have appeared in my sculpture.
They resurfaced as a means of expressing this theme. I draw upon the rich symbolism and associations inherent
in this common imagery and deepen it with the non-traditional materials I include. Through these means I build artwork
with subtle layers of meaning. Always present in my work is a strong emphasis on color, form, and attention to design
and construction.
